Wisdom… from God or man?

Wisdom

I find it interesting that when I looked for an image for my thoughts this morning, all I found was: knowledge, books, learning, education, but no particular picture for wisdom. Odd… Except, wisdom is the proper application of knowledge. How do you draw a picture of proper application, it’s an action of the mind.

I was considering a story I read this morning about a new fossil find that dated back billions of years. As I first thought of this, I pictured a fish or maybe a sea creature of some sort or maybe even a microscopic picture of a cell, but then I read the article. It seems that there was a strange formation of rock that “might” be formed by a colony of bacteria. It was assumed that this was the cause of the formation and then dating of that particular formation was carried out and the resulting statement and headline announced that a “fossil” had been found. Really?!?

Now, I really do love science and all that goes with it. I love seeing and figuring out how our world works. But… I also look at this world as a creation of a our God and therefore, temper my assumptions based on His revelation.

Solomon said, Prov. 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” If we don’t start with God as the creator, our accumulated knowledge and application will be faulted. It may be simplistic, but I prefer to accept the testimony of God’s Word and view my world through the lens of a Creator, and what an amazing creation it is!

Wisdom from above

Paul tells us in 1 Cor. 1:20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom,23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

God’s foolishness is wiser than men… When we try to explain without taking Him into consideration, we make fools of ourselves. By all means, let us examine, let us consider, let us observe and draw conclusions, but let us not ignore the source and design of the Designer.

Perhaps we, in our foolishness, should listen to the Creator! Just thinking… God bless!

Identity… Who am I?

Who am I?

Who am I?

I know that most people will readily answer this question with a name and perhaps an affiliation or job, but I am wondering a little deeper than that. Many folks seek identity in work or family. They may not even recognize the identity is a basic need for every person. We just say, “I am me!” What else do I need to know?

We are issued a social security number now when we are born. We have a birth certificate with a name on it, usually given to us by our parents. We get a driver’s license when we get old enough to drive. We may have a business card or a work identification card that tells who we are. But do these things define us?

However, in considering who we are, our family and our associates definitely have an influence on us and how we think, how we perceive the world. Think about it. We learn attitudes and principles (or lack thereof) from the people who raise us. We tend to associate with people who think like us, talk like us, even look like us to some extent. Why is that? Identity. We need to know who we are.

Identity… Who am I?

When it comes to family, we cannot help the circumstances of our birth, but we can choose the people we associate with. In one particular case, we can choose a parent and family the will make a difference for us for eternity. An identity if you will that defines everything else in our lives. I am talking about being a Christian. First, always and forever.

The Father of a Christian is God Himself. He adopts us as His own when we commit to Him in faith because of His Son, Jesus. He gives us a portion of Himself at baptism, in the gift of the Holy Spirit. We gain a new identity in Him. Our associations change, we begin to identify with other Christians and we “hang out” with them. Our identity solidifies into “I am a Christian” above all else. At least… that is the way it should be!

Sometimes we let other things distract us or influence. Politics and political parties, hobbies or sports activities, social clubs or activities. All of these are ok and even acceptable, but not if they begin to define our identity. We must be Christians first and always.

Who am I? I am a child of God, a brother of Christ, a servant in the Lord’s kingdom. All else in my life must fall below or in line with this. God bless and I hope you have a great day!!

The Lord gave me a hill.

A little more than a year-and-a-half ago, we moved back to Tennessee from Michigan. We were selected to work with a small, country church and live in a house in what is known locally as a sink between a state highway and the church building.

This sink is a low place between the highway and the church, both of which are several feet higher in elevation than the house.

When we moved here, we had no idea at all of the purpose behind our move outside of our own desire to be closer to our grandchildren. We were young and foolish. It turned out there was a purpose we did not reckon or even think about.

Just after dark on New Year’s Eve 2015, we were returning from a fellowship dinner at the church when I had a heart attack. Much of the next…

Little Handprints

Two little handprints on a glass door at the church building. My first thought was that someone was going to be upset. The doors are dirty now. But then I noticed that these handprints were too high for the size of them. Someone must have been holding that little one in order for them to get those handprints that high up.

I like clean doors, but all I could see that day was two small handprints, high on the glass. I think I know whose they were, but it really doesn’t matter. The evidence was there that someone had brought a child to the services of the church at this place. That is always a good thing.

A tall person (dad, granddad, step-dad, foster dad) was carrying a small person (child). They were at services. They were learning and sharing. They were putting God first at that moment. Dad was setting an example and establishing priorities, a child was learning to love God and His Word.

Nothing is more important. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Eph. 6:4

Two small handprints

I like clean doors, but I love big people bringing little people to church! Parents demonstrating in action how important God is! God bless!!
